Fishing: More Interesting Than You Think
December 25th 2007 21:03
I used to find fishing boring. And smelly. Whenever someone talked about fishing it brought back many memories of long, hot summer afternoons with my parents, sitting on the dock and watching them for hours while they dangled their fishing rods in the water, waiting for their catch. Maybe it was my parents’ lack of experience or suitable bait, but seldom did they catch anything. That led my sister and me to the conclusion that fishing must be a futile exercise.
Due to my mates at work, I no longer think that way. Never being a girly girl and given the fact the girls in my team like to talk about weddings, babies and engagements all day long, I gravitated to the boys. Listening to them talk about sports cars, motor cycles and fishing was quite refreshing compared to the endless drone of girl talk coming from the side of my desk. And Nim, one of the boys, was willing to talk to me about fishing so long as I was interested. That led to him telling me which rods he liked, and why he had pictures of fishing equipment called Dog Fight on his computer which silly me, had mistaken for motor cycle parts. I then noticed he had Tide Times on his desk – brochures telling you the differences in times of high and low water. One of them even had a cute logo on the front for a shop called Fish Outta Water. Finally, it led to discussions about Nim’s prime time viewing for the week, a show called Adventure Bound which was on every Thursday night on TVS, or, as I called it, the “funny channel” as it is a community TV station, and so it was not mentioned in the local TV guides.
I started watching Adventure Bound out of curiosity. At first, I thought I had the channel on, as when I switched on the TV there was a man droning on about cooking. Bored, I switched it off but the next day Nim reassured me that I was indeed watching the right show and that I had switched it on during the cooking segment.
I persevered. It took me a few views but I was soon hooked. Even though I still needed convincing that there was more to fishing than meets the eye, I grew to appreciate the beauty of fish, particularly gummy sharks which I thought were cute but according to Nim, were “crappy fish” as they were easy to catch. The presenters often talked about catching sambos and jew fish. Every Friday Nim would take pains to tell me what the correct names for those fish were. Talk about a real team bonding experience!
