Do cats enjoy the heat? I used to think they did, from the ramblings of my ex-neighbour. My ex-neighbour always had the heater on during winter so her cats could lie in front of it and bask in the heat.
“Look at them,” she used to say. “My electricity bills are so high because I like to keep the heater on so they can lie in front of the fire.”
Ditto Brett’s cats. Brett is one of those crazy people who leave their heater on 24/7. He even leaves it on when he goes to bed so his cats can also enjoy its warmth. If it was me, I wouldn’t be game enough to, in case one of the cats knocked it over and the heater then burnt the floorboards or, worse, fell on top of some paper which then caught on fire. But then again, Brett has one of those old fashioned heavy heaters. It would take more than a cat or two to knock it over.
Towards the end of January, there was a huge heat wave in Sydney. I remember it was so hot, I was drenched in sweat from walking twenty minutes from my place to the city. My sister and I headed for Pitt Street Mall and stayed inside the shopping centre all day to beat the heat. Later that evening, I met up with Brett. I asked him how Butterscotch and Gingersnap coped with the heat.
“They hate it,” he said. “They’re boiling inside their fur suits.”
“How do you know?” I asked. “I thought cats like the heat.”
“No, not these ones. They lie down all day,” he said.
Fur suits. Hmmm, what an apt description. A few days later I ran into my ex-neighbour while I was with another friend. We had fallen out over a year ago so I was surprised she started talking to me again. She told me her cats also hated the heat wave. It seems some heat is okay, but not too much.
