Getting in Touch With my Inner Fraidy Cat

Now I have heard that cats can get aggressive when they are frightened. I found this hard to understand as it sounded like a contradiction. That was until today.

I was at my doctor’s waiting to get a vaccination when all of a sudden she started asking me questions about how my body reacted to other vaccines in the past. It was a frustrating exercise as it had been six months ago when I had received my other injections and it was hard to remember all the details. I do remember getting a swelling at the injection site but when she started asking me how big it was, what colour was the swelling and how hard it was…I really struggled to pull up the details.

Then she started making phone calls and consulting other doctors for their opinion. That was when I started to get frightened as I knew this wasn’t routine. Half an hour later she told me I was in the minority of people who have adverse reactions to certain vaccines and she was trying to decide whether it was worth it for me to go ahead with the current one.

I got cranky and snappy. Part of it was out of the frustration of being unable to remember all the details so I could answer her questions. If I had known she was going to ask about my previous vaccines, I would have kept a diary. The other thing that was fueling my frustration was paying my doctor for basically nothing.

In the end, she sent me away and said she would need to do more research before deciding whether or not it was worth continuing with my treatment. I apologised to her for being so snappy and explained my behaviour came from fear as I had read that the vaccine in question vaccines could, in some rare cases, make someone sick enough to be hospitalised so I could understand my doctor’s caution.

In the end, I got my shot and so far nothing has happened (touch wood). All the time inside her office, with her away, I felt like a frightened cat.

I think its true for all animals, they dont like to show fear if they are afraid. Its a sign of weakness in the wild, if you show fear you get attacked, so its better to go on the offensive when unsure. I think Ive learned too much from my animal friends...

Same here. There is no room for weakness in the wild.
