Ginger Cat Figurine
September 13th 2011 21:00
Another new friend. I got this Schleich cat figurine from the large Dymocks store in the Sydney CBD. It reminds me of my friend Rachel, who is Chinese but speaks fluent Mandarin, English and German. She loves to tell me how people’s jaw drops the first time they see her speaking in German. They obviously can’t handle the apparent incongruity.
According to Rachel, German is very harsh on the ears, especially the number 888 (try saying acht hundert acht und achtzig). I agree but I put my opinion down to bias against all languages except for English rather than anything else. According to Fred, we all have this bias where we think our birth language is the most musical of all. That said, he likes listening to Thai people speak as he finds their language very musical. At least the trilingual Rachel has an informed opinion on phonetics.
