Goodbye, Virtual Friend
January 4th 2011 21:00
It’s been almost a week and I have heard nothing back from my virtual friend. I checked with Brett and he said he called her on her birthday and she told him to message her via Facebook so I know she’s been on it. I do remember someone telling me she’s very mercurial so obviously she has gone cold on me. Which makes me wonder why she wanted to have me as a virtual friend in the first place. What I also don’t get is why she’s not like this with Brett.
Brett is not taking sides on this issue – not that I expect him to. When I told Fred, he thought it sounded like too much like hard work. “I get tenants in the buildings I look after who are friendly to me one day and the next time I see them, I say hello and they look at me as if they don’t know me. I’ve seen this happen so many times that I no longer take it personally. It’s all about them: When things are going well in their lives, they’re warm and friendly. When things are going bad, they don’t want to know me.”
“Consistency is important,” said Brett when I asked him how my virtual (ex) friend was going.
I still remember something Fred once said that had me rolling around in laughter. “Keep it consistent,” he complained to me after having an encounter with a particularly mercurial person. “If you’re going to be surly, be surly all the time. If you’re going to be friendly, be friendly all the time. At least the other person is not walking on eggshells.”
