I’m a grunter at heart. This suits me as I’m not a particularly social person to begin with. I grunt at my sister, at my friends Brett and Andrea, and to my colleague. All four have known me long enough to know it’s not personal. In fact, my sister grunts back at me. So does my colleague. At first, he compared me to a walrus.
“Are you sure you know what a walrus sounds like?” I asked him.
“Trust me. I have seen enough David Attenborough documentaries to know you sound like a walrus,” he said.
Whenever I grunt now, he will do his David Attenborough impersonation. Usually he will say something like, “The walrus is trying to communicate. It is not being very successful.”
Another time, he said I sounded like a gorilla. After grunting back at me a few times, he put on his David Attenborough voice and said, “Gorillas in the mist. Some people spend hours in the jungle searching for it. I sit next to it. Miracles of the modern world.”
He had me clutching at my stomach in laughter. Actually, his impersonations brighten up my day. It’s nice to be in an office where people are on the same level as me.
