Several posts ago I mentioned how I got a refund on a boxed set of books as the box was damaged.
Well, given the slow retail trade of late, the bookshop that sold me the set decided to have a sale. The bookshop in question almost never has a sale. I decided to see if I could get the boxed set for an even lower price than what they were offering, given that it was now dented and buckled in a couple of places.
I went looking for someone to assist me. The person at the counter had a similar appearance to the man who had served me previously; I’m terrible with faces so I hoped he was a different man. He was and to my luck, he was someone who was fussy about books’ condition as well.
He offered to take off an extra five per cent, explaining that was the only set the store had. I asked if he could do ten per cent, almost matching the American price. He looked at the box, noting all the bumps, buckles and hole on the top and agreed. At that price, it was too good to knock him back. Okay, I could have ordered it online but, as I have learnt from experience, there is no guarantee you will receive goods in perfect condition either. As they say, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush…
