Have You Ever Felt Tempted to Buy a Book Just for the Cover?

I am so tempted to buy these fantasy cat books by Erin Hunter :
Warriors books web site
My sister would despise me for this but I want to get the books for the cover art. The cats on the covers are so gorgeous and cute. The one on the Dawn book in The New Prophecy series reminds me of Butterscotch when he gets in his imperious moods.
I am trying not to buy them as I am not a big sci-fi/fantasy fan. In high school I struggled with reading and writing essays on Watership Down. Don’t get me wrong; I love the idea of a book on rabbits but I found it all too much to be reading about rabbits that can talk. I guess I don’t like books that stretch the imagination. I like to play it safe and stick to stuff that I know could happen in real life. The Warrior books feature cats that can talk to one another so I think I wouldn’t really enjoy them. And yet, when one is tempted…
My sister thinks it’s superficial to buy a book just for the cover. So do I which is why I’ve tried not to do it. Some of the best books I’ve ever read have had bad covers just as some of the most attractively packaged books I’ve read have had lame plots (usually romance novels back when I went through a romance phase). Because I’ve got a thing for cats, I love buying books that have cute cats on the cover or on the insides. They make my heart melt. Now I know what my friend Andrea says when she goes on about her cats’ “catty yellow eyes”.
Come on, be honest. Have you been guilty of the same thing?

As I'm sure you realise, Watership Down, like the many Duncton (talking moles!) books, is allegorical, and so in a way represents real life. But I understand your point about needing imagination to enjoy this second-hand look at ourselves. It's as if one needs to be a little removed from reality to appreciate this view of reality.
If you like first-hand animal stories, I recommend a book called "Smoky Joe the Fish Eater", by John O'Grady. He also wrote "They're a Weird Mob". The stars of Smoky Joe are a cranky, old writer and an abandoned kitten. They adopt each other, reluctantly, and the rest of the story is pure charm.
Regards,
Chris

No, there has never really been a book cover that got my attention enough for me to buy it without reading the blurb. Some of my all-time fave books have all had plain boring covers.
