Higgins and Miggins are Terrified of the Hallway
July 8th 2008 21:00
It’s a typical night in the neighbourhood. I’m reading in bed when my neighbour knocks on my door to tell me something. I live right next door to her flat in a block of units.
I open the door and she begins to talk. I am so engrossed in our conversation I don’t notice her cats Higgins and Miggins have come out of her flat and are standing behind her, looking around. My neighbour can obviously sense them or maybe she can feel their furry bodies as they brush past her. She tells me to look down and I see the two cats.
Slowly, as we continue talking, the cats look down the hallway. Higgins and Miggins don’t like anyone watching them whenever they venture out of out their flat. As my neighbour and I try not to pay any attention to them, they slowly step down the hallway. A few minutes later they have made it to the end of the hallway, where the stairwell is. The cats then move towards the stairwell and look down. By now, my neighbour says, “Look!” That’s enough. The cats know they’re now being watched. I look to the side just in time to see two large black cats fly back into her doorway. They run so quickly you can hear the pounding of their paws hitting the carpet.
“They’re wondering what’s down there,” my neighbour says. “They can’t understand where the hallway leads to.” I can’t blame them. At night, the dimly lit hallway with its lime green walls looks pretty dark and spooky – and that’s to a human. I’d imagine to a cat it must be sinister and evil-looking. No wonder Higgins and Miggins aren’t keen on venturing down the stairs.
