Higgins and Miggins now Remember me
May 2nd 2010 21:00
I spent my last day of my holidays with Fred. We bumped into my ex-neighbour and I asked if I could see her cats. She agreed and Fred and I agreed to meet up later on.
What a difference several months makes. It must have been a year since I had last seen Higgins and Miggins and they had looked terrified of me. On this particular day, I was expecting the same reaction but to my surprise, they simply stood there looking at me.
I went to stroke the closest cat. “Hello, Higgins,” I said.
“That’s Miggins,” corrected my neighbour.
What? There must have been some mistake here; Higgins was always the larger of the two and the cat I was stroking was definitely bigger than the one that was sitting beside my neighbour. I said so to her and she explained that Higgins had lost a lot of weight since he had been sick. In the meantime, Miggins had compensated for this by putting on weight.
“But Fred told me it was Miggins who was sick,” I said.
“No, it was Higgins,” she said. “I almost lost him. I spent a thousand dollars trying to get him better.”
After several minutes of watching me, it looked liked they remembered me. They approached me and let me squeeze their little feline faces in my hand, which is what they used to let me do. I put my face right up close to theirs and they simply stared at me with their yellow catty eyes. The final test was picking them up; apparently I was the only person apart from my neighbour who the cats allowed to do this to them. I grabbed Higgins and held him up in the air. After a few seconds he kicked me I put him down. Then I did the same thing to Miggins.
