Housing Stupidity
March 25th 2010 21:00
One afternoon, just as I was getting ready to go home, my colleague was telling me about a person who paid $58 million for a house in Perth HERE .
“This displaces Sydney as the place that has the most expensive real estate in Australia,” said my colleague.
“Fifty eight million? Just think of how many starving children you could feed, how many hospitals can be built…” I said, shocked.
“That’s a stupid comment,” said my colleague.
“Why?”
“To the buyer, fifty eight million might be a small amount. For example, if someone pays $400k for a property, no one says, ‘Think of how many children that can be fed.’”
“Actually, I’m thinking about cats. Imagine how many cats could be saved from animal shelters with that kind of money.”
“Okay, cats then. Think of how many cats can be re-homed, how many can be saved…”
“Shut up,” I said, laughing. “Butterscotch came from a shelter so it’s no laughing matter. In fact, if it wasn’t for Brett deciding to take him and Gingersnap in, both cats would have been put down and there would be no Butterscotch and Gingersnap.”
