How can These Books be out of Print?
June 22nd 2010 21:00
After reading Peter Singer's Animal Liberation, I was trying to get my hands on other animal liberation books that were listed in the bibliography – namely, Animal Factories by Singer and Jim Mason; and Animal Machines by Ruth Harrison. The latter work is supposed to have done for the animal liberation movement what Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring did for the environmental movement.
Given such a ground breaking history, I was surprised to find out today that these two books are out of print, especially when I found a copy of Carson’s book at Borders.
That said, copies of Animal Factories are readily available through the Amazon Marketplace. Animal Machines is another story; used copies are over US $100 each on the same web site. Apparently it had only had one printing.
“At least you can buy out of print books from the internet now,” said my friend Fred. “Back when I used to buy out of print books, I used to have to ring up Biblioquest and ask them if they could get a copy. I would then wait to hear back from them, send off a cheque, hoping that the book hasn’t been sold in the meantime and then wait for the book to finally arrive or a refund. It could take a couple of months.”
