Never order a book during lunch time. Not only will you be stuck in a queue, you will be in a hurry to get back to work and are bound to get some clueless person behind the counter. That is what happened to me.
I went to book store X, a store that I have ordered many manga and non-manga books from with no problem so I didn’t anticipate any problems when I decided to check the status of an order and then order the second instalment of Tigerstar & Sasha, a manga kitty love story I wrote about a few posts ago. By chance, I even had volume 1 with me. (I had enjoyed the story so much I decided to read it again which is what I do with many books.) And then began my saga.
Salesperson 1: How can I help you?
Me: I ordered a book a few weeks ago. I was wondering if you could tell me if it is on its way.
S 1: What is your name?
M: Rosenberg.
S 1: Bosenberg? BO?
M: No, Rosenberg.
S 1: It says on our computer that it arrived two days ago. [Starts looking around boxes and the shelves behind her. Salesperson 2 gets off the phone and asks her what is going on. Salesperson 1 explains and Salesperson 2 tells her to go to the store room where recent deliveries are held.]
The salesperson returns a few minutes later to say she couldn’t locate the book but if I waited a few more days someone will call me. I then proceeded with my new order.
M: I would like to order another book.
S 1: What is it called?
M: Tigerstar & Sasha part 2. It is part of a series of books by Erin Hunter.
S 1: How do you spell Tigerstar?
M: It’s tiger and star as in one word.
S 1: How do you spell Tiger?
M: T-I-G-E-R.
By now, my impatience was beginning to show. I looked at my watch and noticed ten minutes had already passed and I was due back at work in five minutes. By now a long queue had formed…right in front of Salesperson 2’s counter. So much for my idea of getting someone else to serve me.
S 1: I can’t locate it.
I hand her a copy of Tigerstar & Sasha part 1 and turn to the back of the book where it lists the titles of other books in this series. Armed with this information, she still couldn’t locate the book on her system.
Finally Salesperson 2 came over to see what was taking so long. Salesperson 1 tells her she cannot locate Tigerstar & Sasha on the system. Salesperson 2 then tells me since it is a manga novel, I would need to go to the manga section.
I stormed off in a hurry, muttering “Far out! How hard is it to order a book?” I passed the grouchy undercover security guard who had a scowl on his face and made my way to the manga counter where I was served by a more experienced salesperson. As if to compensate for Salesperson 1’s slowness, she quickly located the book on the system and placed my order. She also found the other book I had ordered.
