Having lunch at my sister’s place one day, she offered me some vegetarian leftovers that my mum had made for her. The dish looked nice enough: capsicums with Chinese mushrooms and, most importantly of all, lots of sauce! Here was my chance to have vegetarian for a change. Even avoiding one meat dish could make a difference.
I took one bite. It tasted ok. Several bites later, I found the dish bland. I think this more had to do with the sauce than the ingredients themselves. As I’ve said before, my mum is a terrible vegetarian cook.
Needless to say, this led to a discussion about the ethics of using leather goods. Noticing my new leather handbag, my sister said that I was as bad as those who wear fur. I was going to say the same thing applies to her when I realised she doesn’t have any leather in the house due to her penchant for inexpensive clothing and accessories. All her shoes and handbags are made of plastic. A noble deed, you might say. However, my sister’s choices are due more to monetary constraints than anything else.
Instead, I said when it comes to fur, animals are caught in traps and could be left there for days to die in agony before they are released from the traps only to then be killed for their fur. At least leather is supposed to be a by-product of the meat industry. The animals are stunned before quickly being killed. Surely they must have a more humane death than those caught in traps.
That said, my sister is right: I am a hypocrite.
