I am now Known as the Office Cat Woman
June 7th 2009 21:00
It’s ironic how, being a misanthrope, I have met more people after I became a cat lover than before. Having pictures of cats on my desk at work is a great conversation opener. People can’t help but stop at my desk and comment on or ask my questions about the cats I’ve got photos of. Even a colleague – who I didn’t know very well at the time – went and bought me a Garfield to cheer me up when Butterscotch went missing nearly a year ago.
Busy at work one morning, I heard a voice behind me: “Hey, Cat Woman!”
I spun around. Standing beside me was Cat Man #2.
I laughed and said, “That’s funny that you called me that as there used to be this guy who liked to come to my desk and talk to me about cats. Anyway, my team nicknamed him Cat Man. It was so sad when he left. And now you’re talking to me about cats and calling me Cat Woman.”
“Just be lucky you didn’t call him Cat Man Do!” was his quick reply.
Being a bit slow when it comes to jokes, it took me a second to get his pun. Then I laughed at its cleverness.
But then it turned out I wasn’t the only slow person in the office. Another colleague then said, “Oh, yeah, Kathmandu, isn’t that the capital of Nepal?”
Thank you Butterscotch and Gingersnap for helping me meet lots of other cat lovers. I still hate people in general but every now and then I meet special people who are charming, witty and funny.
