Like most pet parents, I would not dream of eating one of my companion animals, which is why I feel so guilty now.
Attending a work function one night, I hung out with my workmates to take advantage of the free drinks and nibblies. I was new to this but the others were regulars. They told me where were the best spots to stand to get first dibs on the food and when the little noodle boxes (which were supposed to contain the best nibblies) would be served.
I ended up dining on spring rolls with lime juice, meat pies, curry puffs and rice balls. After a while, the meat pies became tedious and I started declining them, hoping to get more spring rolls instead. After an hour, I saw waiters wandering around with the noodle boxes. I grabbed one and started eating. Yes, my colleagues were right. The Chinese noodles were delicious. There were strips of meat in them as well but I couldn’t work out what it was.
I saw more noodle boxes coming my way so I grabbed another one. I was not so lucky this time. I got gnocchi and mushrooms. I have nothing against either of these items and was about to take a bite when a colleague told me there was cream sauce inside. I happen to hate dairy products. I took a sniff and pong! The sauce smelt creamy so I gave this dish the flick.
By now, I was tired from standing around and wanted to go home. My workmates kept asking me to stay; apparently the desserts were to die for but I had had enough.
The next day, one of my colleagues came into work saying how delicious the duck was.
What duck?
“The duck in the Chinese noodles,” explained my colleague.
“Cannibalism!” I cried as my other colleagues looked up in wonder.
I pray that my beloved quackers will forigve me for this unintentional act of betrayal.
