I have become red panda crazy after seeing one on Wild Vets, a TV show. They are so cute, especially when they are eating fruit.
I remember, as a child, one of my favourite commercials was the Taronga Zoo one. That was when I first saw a red panda. I had no idea what it was until years later when I read about them in an animal book. Even now, I find it hard to believe they are related to giant pandas. Firstly, it’s the size difference. Secondly, the differences in their colours. Thirdly, giant pandas look like bears while red pandas don’t. I know from watching wildlife documentaries giant pandas can become aggressive. I wonder if the same applies to red pandas.
This reminds me of the time my sister and I were at the red panda enclosure at Taronga Zoo. We spent ages trying to spot one. We knew there was one around as we could hear other people talking about it. So where was it? Someone took pity on me and told me where to look. I was disappointed. All I saw was a ball of red fur high up on one of the trees. I thanked the stranger and then told my sister were it was. We took some photos but they weren’t spectacular. In fact, they were ordinary. While my sister still oohs and ahhs over her gorilla, tiger, lion, mountain goat etc photos, she never says anything when she sees the red panda photos.
