“I was a Mummified Cat”

Like many children, my sister and I loved to make up silly songs. One of them was I was a Mummified Cat. The song only had three lines – sung together, they didn’t even make sense but it didn’t matter to us. We were more interested in the rhythm of the words.
So we would sing, “I was a mummified cat/I was mummified before I was born/I was a mummified cat”. Talk about great lyrics!
To spice it up, my sister would often change the first line to “I was a bummified cat”. That always made her giggle.
The inspiration behind the song was, of course, the mummified cats of ancient Egypt. I was studying ancient Egyptian history at primary school at the time and I was intrigued by the ancient Egyptians’ way of life and their antiquities. King Tut was my favourite Pharaoh. So it was inevitable that if my sister and I were to write a song that it would feature mummies.
At school, we learnt that the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats as gods. In a world where there are plenty of cat-haters, this seems almost surreal.
