I Wished I was a cat Until I Read This…

As a cat lover and people hater, it’s no surprise I often wish I could become a cat. That was until I read something gross about mother cats.

I can’t get this out of my mind. It’s too gross for words. One night I was lying in bed reading the ASCPA Complete Guide to Cats by James R. Richards when I came across a section on kitty pregnancy. Anyway, the author said that kittens don’t know how to urinate or defecate so the mother cat will lick these areas on her babies to get them to release waste. She then swallows her kittens’ waste. Ugh! Why can’t she show her kittens how to use a litter tray? Maybe it’s because they are blind at birth and are too young to be shown how to use a litter tray.

I wonder what the mother cat thinks of this. Wouldn’t she get any infections from the bacteria in the waste? Wouldn’t she find it unpleasant? On the other hand, I find the instinct behind this behaviour amazing. Cats can’t talk so it’s not as if a pregnant cat can ask another cat what to do when she gives birth. Somehow, driven by instinct, she will deliver her kittens, eat the placentas, nurse her babies and teach them to go to the toilet.

I hope that if I do come back as a cat, I either come back as a male or a desexed female. But then again, I am judging cats based on human standards. Maybe if I was a mother cat I wouldn’t mind eating my kittens’ waste at all.

LOL! As soon as I read the intro on the front page, I knew what this was about. From what I remember reading, quite a long time ago, the mother's licking stimulates the eliminative functions. Without it, the kittens would die. If newborn kittens are abandoned, for some reson, the human caretaker has to do the job -- with fingers! And yes, if you were a cat, the problem of disgust wouldn't exist. Animals do what they do by instinct, without having to think about it.

Thanks, Catana. I also like your blog as Asperger's is another one of my passions.

Ive actually got pics up on my blog of Zenith doing it - I too was amazed all over again that such a young girl, not even a year old herself, could know how to do everything without hesitation. She ate every placenta, and always feeds and does 'nappy changes' before they are ready.

What is out of the ordinary is that Zenith, when she feels its not safe to leave them, will do it to herself! Just so she doesnt have to get up and leave! Now, thats above and beyond the call of duty.

Remember Queenie, cats dont use toilet paper - no matter what kind of cat you are there is gonna be some of that going on!
