I’m a Separatist. So What?
November 2nd 2009 21:00
It was the time of the year I dread as it makes me grumpy: Melbourne Cup. I was planning my usual boycott. I have been boycotting Melbourne Cup for as long as I can remember.
“So why do you hate Melbourne Cup?” asked my colleague.
“Because it’s so banal. I hate how people stop whatever they’re doing just to watch a horse race. It also encourages gambling,” I said.
“It’s just a bit of fun.”
“I doubt the horses would feel that way,” I growled.
“So what is wrong with people getting together to have fun?”
“Nothing. I just find Melbourne Cup stupid. There’s no way in the world I’m going to wear a hat or a fancy dress. I hate how people carry on like the world is going to end and how they feel the urge to take the afternoon off. Why not just take the whole day off? Jeez, it’s just a horse race. Nothing to get excited about.”
“You’re a separatist,” said my colleague. “You like to go against the majority.”
“So? What’s wrong with that?”
“If you go against the majority just for the sake of it, it means you are as bad as the majority.”
“I go against the majority as I don’t believe just because something is popular means it is right or I should follow it. Hence my aversion to Melbourne Cup.” Hmp.
