Is a Taxidermied Cat a Work of Art?
July 15th 2008 21:00
I recently spotted this taxidermied cat as part of Adam Cullen’s exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. At first I thought it was a fake animal. I took a closer look. It looked liked a real dead cat. I read the plaque that was underneath the glass box and got my confirmation. Poor thing. Imagined being stuffed and covered with plastic and having your limbs bandaged all in the name of art and creativity. It seems such a disrespectful way to treat a dead animal. On the other hand, the cat has now been immortalised for hundreds, if not thousands, to see.
Would you consider this to be a work of art?
It is definitely an expression of one’s ideas so I guess that must make it an art form. It certainly pushes the envelope. I wonder about the symbolism behind it. Perhaps Cullen is trying to tell us something about the link between death and immortality.
I also wonder where Cullen got the cat from and who taxidermied it. I hope the cat had already been dead when it was chosen to become a work of art. I also hope it had died peacefully.
For those of you who wish to check the cat out, Cullen’s exhibition runs until 27 July 2008.

But you're not alone in saying it's not your cup of tea. It grossed my sister out.
