Is it Cruel to Have Pet Birds?

One afternoon at work, some colleagues of mine were having a water cooler discussion about whether or not it was cruel to have birds as pets. The majority said yes. Their reasoning was birds should be free to fly around in the wild, not kept in a cage.

The question had me wondering as my sister had several budgies as pets when she was a teenager. There was the green and gold one, the blue one and the grey one. She doted on all three birds and cried when they died. She treated them with love and they seemed happy to be in their cage, chirping away each day. Still, when my parents were out of the house, my sister would close all the doors and windows and let the budgies fly around the house. They loved to fly to the top of the curtains and perch on the curtain rods. We would keep an eye on the time and just before our parents were due to come home, my sister would get up on a chair and grab each bird and put it back in the cage.

To me, being a pet bird doesn’t seem to be such a bad fate. Okay, being caged might not be fun. On the other hand, being caged means the bird is protected from predators. And at least a pet bird doesn’t have to worry about food or water. Or maybe I’m being naïve. Maybe being out in the wild, having to constantly search for food and being on the lookout for predators is preferable to being confined to a small cage. What do you think?

Birds, particularly prey birds like budgies, dont mind the caged life at all. They enjoy the human interaction when they get out, but generally, being out of the cage is too 'big' for them, its why when they get out, its hard to get them back. They are dazzled by the space, and cant find their way home again. Its really sad when a pet bird gets out - he'll be someones dinner in 20mins or less, as he has no survival instinct.

We are up to our third pet sparrow. They adore being pets! When they no longer have to constantly fight for survival, they play and have very enjoyable lives. My mynah bird loves being an indoor bird....But she has a whole room to herself, and never goes in the cage.

That's interesting what you said about budgies, Kleonaptra. I guess birds can get domesticated like cats and dogs.

I used to breed lovebirds, and one was always trying to get out - one day, she managed it. We left the doors open to the cage and guess who got hungry and very humbly came home? Its a scary world out there!

Kleonaptra, I'm glad your lovebird came back. My mum decided to experiment with one of my sister's budgies. She opened the cage and watched it fly off. Of course it never came back.

Budgies have the least mental capacity. They are the least likely to return home. With the larger parrots you can get lucky simply because they know the cage. Budgies may return if they see it, but they panic too easily.
