Is There Any Creature You Would Like to Become Extinct?

It’s a cruel world. I was looking at a book which had a picture of a mosquito when this question popped into my head. It sounds cruel but let’s put it this way: I don’t think I would miss mosquitos if they became extinct. They are nothing but pests. I wonder if they do anything for the environment. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I find their buzzing in my ear when I am trying to sleep really annoying. I also hate getting bitten. It’s not the actual bite that bothers me but the resulting itchiness. I could easily spend all day scratching. When one of my cousins was two years old, she used to scratch her mosquito bites until she drew blood. It wasn’t pleasant to watch. Not only that, mosquitos can spread disease.

Some of the above comments could easily apply to larvae and cockroaches. Would anyone really miss them if they became extinct? Most people would say cockroaches are definitely pests and farmers aren’t fond of caterpillars as they can destroy their crops. On the other hand, maggots, which most people find revolting, help the environment in that they consume rotting flesh. If it wasn’t for them, there would be more rotting corpses (animal and human) lying around and the greater possibility of them spreading disease. But then again, maybe not, as creatures such as carrion beetles and vultures would get to consume them instead.

Are there any living creatures you really can’t stand and wouldn’t mind if they became extinct?

Your post reminds me of when I was in Suriname in 2001. I took a tour in the rain forest, which was great, but it had these big deer flies, that seemed to love humans. They're annoying at first, but if they're allowed to get a good stab into you, it hurts like H-E-Double-Hockeysticks. I think I killed over half-a-dozen of them, and then after the tour, I remembered that you're not supposed to do that, that you should impact the environment as little as possible. As a biologist, I can appreciate the idea, but if I ever take another rain forest tour and run into those deer flies again, I'll probably kill as many more of the little bastards as I can lay my boots on. Those suckers hurt!
