Just Something to Make you Puke…

Like me, Fred eats very few things. Unlike me, Fred is afraid of trying new foods.
“Before I try anything new, it has to past three tests,” he explains. “Firstly, it has to look good. Second, it has to sound good. Thirdly, it has to smell good. If it doesn’t meet the first test, I don’t even go that far.”
Because of this, Fred has never had pizza, Thai, Italian, Indian or Mexican food. Sometimes I will tell Fred about the few times I dared try something new and he will say he wished he could be like me, not that I’m much better as most of the time I end up not liking what I’ve tried.
That brings me to Extreme Cuisine: Exotic Tastes From Around the World, a book I found on special for a princely $5 HERE. After reading about the sixty or so dishes that most people would consider disgusting, I feel quite normal. Ditto Fred.
I was surprised to read about the number of animals and insects that are edible: sea horses, sea worms, nutria, spiders, maggot cheese (this includes munching on the maggots)…If being adventurous means eating any of these foods, I’m happy to join Fred’s camp.
Which brings me to Bear Grylls. I was telling Fred about the time I saw Grylls practically throwing up after eating a goat’s testicle.
“Not only do the things he eat sound disgusting, he pulls faces while eating them which puts you off from trying them out,” I said.
“Bear Grylls never said the things he eat would be delicious,” replied Fred. “All he said that these are the foods you can eat when you’re out in the wild and trying to survive.”
Better Grylls than me…
