Leather Now Bothers Me
August 11th 2009 21:00
Ever since I saw a video of a dog being skinned alive for its fur at http://animalsaviors.org/, I feel uncomfortable seeing fur and leather products in shops.
Anyway, I could not help but notice how many fur products there were. There were the usual fur collared jackets but then I noticed little fur balls on a pashmina. I touched them and yes, they were real fur. The thought that an animal could have been skinned alive to make this product put shivers up my spine. I walked out of the shop in disgust and told my sister they sold fur products.
But who am I to talk? Unlike my sister, I prefer to buy luxury brands and in one of those stores I saw handbags that had fur trim on them. Again, I felt the same feeling of revulsion except that this time it extended to their leather goods. Even though they were having a sale, I felt uncomfortable with the idea of buying a new leather handbag and walked out empty handed.
Until I saw that video, I had been okay about buying leather products as I felt they were a by-product of meat. Now, any product that is manufactured from animals makes me cringe.
So I have made a vow: no more animal products in my home just as I also plan to discourage my sister from supporting shops that sell fur products.

I understand what you mean about leather and fur. I have a leather jacket, but I haven't worn it in years. I'd love to get rid of it, but my parents tell me no every time I bring it up. Doubt it even fits any more.

Is this for real? I didn't know that. I thought shampoo and toothpaste were made from chemicals and that candles and soaps used to be made from blubber but I thought that had since changed.
I wonder what my vegetarian friends would think of this and would they be prepared to give up their soap, shampoo etc.
Thanks for posting.
