Leave me Alone (Revisited)

January 23rd 2012 21:02

Anyone who knows me knows while I am big on animals, the same does not apply to humans. It’s not that I’m anti-social; I just want to be left alone.

For example, last week I had four unpleasant encounters with humans. The first one was when some Asian tourists kept calling out to me while I was racing home. I found their over-eagerness creepy only because it reminded me of a bad experience with some Japanese tourists several years ago. When I stopped, one of them said, “Do you know where the circle is? The water fountain?”

Annoyed, said no and raced off, muttering “racists” under my breath as I often find Asians like to approach me for directions which reminds me of my parents’ racist comments about “putting our people first” and only associating with “our own kind” which I find repellent. Of course, I could have been completely off the mark.

Two days later, I was again rushing home from work when I noticed a fire eating display. I moved to the front to get a closer look when this man put his arm in front of me and told me not to move as his friend was filming the performance. F*ck off, I thought and walked in front of them just to spite them.

Another two days later and I was on my way to the supermarket when I noticed today’s paper lying on a bench. I went over to retrieve it when this man approached me. As a misanthrope, I hate it when people invade my personal space so I immediately moved away. It turned out he was trying to tell me the paper was his. Deciding to give him the benefit of the doubt, I went into Woolworths and did my shopping. By then, my anger started to simmer. Who the hell was he to tell me what to do and to invade my space? I then told myself to calm down. When I saw him outside reading the paper, it only fuelled my anger. Still, I bit my tongue. But fifty metres later, I couldn’t control myself anymore.

“YOU’RE A MORON!” I screamed at him.

Several hours later, I was browsing at Dymocks when this cute Asian guy started chatting to me out of the blue. I got the feeling he was trying to chat me up. It didn’t help that, being summer, I was wearing a low cut dress. He then had to spoil things by asking the Stupid Question that all my Asian friends hate: “Where do you come from?”

I stiffened. “Nowhere,” I said, annoyed at his Stupid Question.

“What is your first language?”

I could not believe my ears. Firstly, being Australian born and proud of it, I speak perfect Anglais.

“English,” I said stiffly, annoyed at his second Stupid Question.

“What’s your background?”

“Nothing. I was born here.” Jesus Christ. Can’t he take the hint?

“So you don’t have any Asian background?”

“No,” I said, wishing he would f*ck off which he then did. I then dismissed him as a flake; all looks and no substance.

The whole episode reminded me of the time a Korean guy called Joyce was trying to chat my sister up at a nightclub. The moment he found out she wasn’t Korean, he simply walked off. Racist.

But going back to the newspaper incident, the same thing happened to one of my sister’s workmates. He went to pick up a paper he found lying on the ground and out of the blue this man appeared, saying the paper was his.

“Well, if it’s yours how come it’s on the ground?” shot the colleague before walking off with it.

That once happened to Fred as well. I will have to ask him whether he ended up taking the paper or not.

If you think I am hard on people and certain members of the Asian community, maybe you can now understand why. Four unpleasant encounters with humans in the space of one week is far too much to take.
