A few days ago I overheard someone talking about me at work.
“She really loves cats,” I heard someone say. I turned around and a woman approached me, asking me if I could provide a home for a ginger tabby kitten she had found abandoned next door to her home.
I had to turn her down due to my landlord. I felt awful doing this and asked her how she ended up with the kitten in the first place.
The lady told me there were some feral cats that lived next door to her house and a few days ago, she found three abandoned kittens. So she and her flatmate decided to adopt one of them and find homes for the other two. Asking around, she did manage to find a home for the second one which left the third one homeless. I suggested she contact someone I knew at work who successfully found a home for an unwanted cat a few months ago. She said she would speak to him and we parted company.
I happened to run into the same lady the next day so I asked her what happened. She said she tried contacting the colleague I suggested but he was away. In the end, her flatmate left the unclaimed kitten with the RSPCA. The lady told me she heard miaowing coming from next door on the previous night. She wondered if it was the mother cat, searching for her babies.
Hearing this sad tale made me want to sit down and write a letter to all those poor unwanted animals out there.
Dear Companion Animal,
I would take you home if I could. It saddens me to hear you have come into the world and dumped somewhere because no one desexed your parents or someone acquired you when you were little, only to be unwanted once the novelty wore off. We live in a disposable society and unfortunately, some people think animals can be treated the same way as garbage.
I love you all and it pains me to see you left on the street. I pray you end up in an animal shelter and am adopted out by another kind-hearted individual. I dread hearing about the ones that are put down.
I want you to know that not everyone is like the person who abandoned you. If I could build a home large enough to take all of you in, I would, but in reality, this is impossible.
Yours sincerely
