Lisa’s Hesitation About Getting a Cat
February 15th 2009 21:00
Hanging out at a bar one night, I met a lady called Lisa who is married to one of the performers, a guitarist/vocalist called Josh. I knew Josh from the previous times I had seen him perform with his many local funk bands. I ended up sitting with the couple and I happened to mention that I blog about animals. Lisa then started showing me photos of their cat, a male tabby called Bootsy. Being a funk freak, I knew straight away he was named after the famous funk musician Bootsy Collins.
Much to my relief, Lisa told me she had always wanted a cat but didn’t feel ready for one. The other problem was Josh wasn’t exactly a cat person. I was relieved to hear about her hesitation because my friends continually pressure me to get a cat and worse, some of them actually ask me if I could adopt a homeless kitten or two. This puts me in an awkward position as one) having a pet is a huge commitment for me and I’m terrified I wouldn’t be able to look after it properly, two) turning down the kittens makes me feel heartless, and three) I don’t want to be evicted from my lovely flat, especially now that my landlord has made it clear no pets are allowed on the premises. So I was glad to hear I wasn’t the only person who took pet ownership really seriously.
In the end, the decision to get Bootsy was made by someone else: Bootsy was given to Josh and Lisa as a present. Luckily, Lisa overcame her hesitation and Josh grew to love the cat. If only happy endings such as this one could happen to all animals that are given away as presents.
