Loving Sadie

As a child, I was surrounded by dogs. Both my neighbours had them: one had a cross bred dog while the other had a black and brown dachshund that I was terrified of as he used to stand on his hind legs and jump up on me.
When I was little I used to play with a little girl who lived nearby. She had a large black, slightly overweight dog called Sadie. This girl adored Sadie; she used to say that half her body was Sadie’s, including her privates! This shocked me as I was only about 6 or 7 at the time and my parents told me never to talk about the ‘dirty’ parts of my body. At the same time, I was gobsmacked by her imagination. The little girl used to ride on Sadie’s back. I felt sorry for the poor dog as I wondered if its back could be broken from carrying her around. Sadie died a few years later.
Then there was the dog my family briefly ‘adopted’. I found this old shaggy dog hanging around the street one day. I felt sorry for it so I gave it some water to drink while my grandma gave it some food to eat. Soon the dog would come to our place each day wanting food and water. This was fine by me but over time, like the dachshund, it would start to stand on its hind legs and put its paws on my shoulders. I found this far more terrifying than the dachshund as this dog was much larger, so when it stood up on its hind legs, it was much taller than me. Things got to the point where I no longer knew how to handle the situation so I asked my neighbour, Mr Harry for advice. Mr Harry knew a lot about dogs so he was the perfect person to ask. Mr Harry said the dog was just trying to be friendly. I’m not sure what happened next – maybe Mr Harry called the pound or the RSPCA - but I never saw that dog again. I hope it did get reunited with its owners.
