Man Kills Leopard
February 21st 2011 21:00
During the massive coverage of the Queensland floods, I spotted this small news item: a beautiful leopard was shot in Mumbai after it attacked a man HERE.
I was saddened by the death of this majestic creature. I showed one of my friends the news item and mumbled, “They shouldn’t have shot it.”
“They had to. If it was harming people then they had to shoot it,” replied my friend.
“Why not shoot the human then?”
“How can you say that?”
“Easy. I’m tired of hearing about animals being killed just because they harmed a human. Who gives humans the right to decide whether an animal lives or dies? And since I hate people, I feel more sympathy for the leopard.”
“It’s like sharks,” I said to Fred. “Whenever there’s a shark attack – mind you, you’re more likely to be hit by a car than attacked by a shark, else there would be shark attack stories in the newspaper every day – there’s a huge hunt to catch it and kill it. If you’re afraid of sharks, don’t go in the water then.”
When I re-counted the leopard story to Fred, he simply laughed.
Fred can be as bad as me when it comes to the black humour department; that’s probably why we get on so well.

There's no denying the logic of the argument: stay out of their environment and you won't get eaten.
On the other hand, man is just another animal and, while the lion might be King of the Jungle, man is King of the Planet. It's instinctive and natural to defend one's own and prey on weaker species. Surivial of the fittest stuff. Efficient, in a mindless sort of way.
It's just disappointing that, despite humans being in pole position to rise above such basic behaviour patterns, we can't do it.
As I've said before, it's no wonder advanced alien lifeforms don't contact us. We're not ready
