Andrea’s other neighbour had a sheep in her backyard so that was another attraction. The sheep was called Mandy and she baa’ed a lot. I used to like to look over the fence and watch her. Mandy didn’t seem to be in the best condition so Andrea’s mother gave any leftover bread to Andrea to feed her. So Andrea and I would stand near the fence and throw the bread over to Mandy. Mandy would come running, baa’ing all the way.
I remember one time the bread was literally green and Andrea still tossed it over. I was horrified at the time – as if a sheep would want to eat green bread but there seemed to be no complaints from Mandy. Anyway, we were kids then and we didn’t worry much about bacteria or food poisoning.
Several years later Mandy died. Andrea often said she thought her neighbour didn’t take care of Mandy properly so we were surprised when the neighbour got a replacement sheep, also called Mandy. Mandy 2 didn’t seem to fare any better than Mandy 1. I’m not sure what happened to Mandy 2 as a few years later, Andrea got married and moved to Sydney and her mother decided it was also a good time to do the same thing and sold the property.
