Maybe Recycling is a Myth

A few months ago I did a blog about a woman who insisted recycling was a myth. HERE
At the time I found her idea hard to believe and I still do.
On the other hand, I just discovered recycling is a myth…at least on one floor in my office.
As far as I know, the other floors in my building don’t have recycling facilities (apart from paper recycling bins, that is). But on my floor, the kitchen has separate bins for glass, plastic and general waste. Imagine how thrilled I was to see this. I could now put my glass and plastic waste in these bins to be recycled later on.
As a self-confessed tree hugger and nature lover, I even got annoyed when my colleague used to dump plastic straight into the general waste bin. I had to bite my tongue to avoid lecturing her about the importance of recycling. I was disappointed she didn’t feel the same way.
Then came this morning. I happened to walk into the kitchen just as the cleaners were emptying the bins. Imagine my dismay when I saw them putting all the plastic and glass products into…you guessed it…one bin along with the general waste. It now brings to mind all those things the recycling-myth woman told me: that recycling was a myth perpetuated by local government to make each person feel they were making a difference, just as when she told me when she grew up in England during WWII, that people were encouraged to have their fences melted down so they can be used to make weapons with. Apparently this was also a myth.
Now that I know all the bins’ contents go into the general waste bins, I feel like asking what’s the point of having these glass and plastic collection bins in they are not going to be used?

Apparently it's a pretty common thing, especially in workplaces. They have separate bins for recycling and general waste and then it all gets tipped in together. It's because people will complain if there's no recycling bin. But they don't take the time to check up on whether it actually gets separated or not.

It all sounds pointless to me. I now take my recycling home and pray that the council does recycle it.
