Miaowless Cats
July 8th 2009 21:02
According to the many cat books I’ve read, cats miaow as a greeting to humans. Then how come Butterscotch and Gingersnap stay silent whenever I see them? Ditto Higgins and Miggins.
Higgins and Miggins are timid cats so the best response I get from them is seeing them stay put. Before they got to trust me, they used to race straight into the cupboard whenever my ex-neighbour let me into her flat. Later, they would hide under the table. My neighbour told me to be patient. “You have to let them come to you,” she said. So I learnt not to push things. Eventually I would get an occasional miaow from Higgins or Miggins.
In contrast, from day one I was greeted by being approached and sniffed at by Butterscotch and Gingersnap. Now they purr whenever they see me. But they still don’t miaow. The only time I have heard them miaow is when they get into cat fights. Just compare these four cats to the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat. This is one cat whose greeting that does conform to the cat books’ description of a cat-to-human interaction. Whenever I see him he will miaow at me and fix his catty yellow eyes on me. I like to miaow back. Whenever I do this I always hope he will miaow back but he never does. I also blink at him hoping he will blink back but he also doesn’t respond, except by staring at me. Not fair, I want to say. How come I don’t stare at you but you don’t mind staring at me?

A cat only breaks the eye contact if he is saying 'I dont mind losing' or sometimes, if I've blinked first, they blink to say, 'oh, we arent fighting' but if he's holding the contact he's thinking, 'ha! Silly human blinked first! I win!'

That does not surprise me. The GTC always like to get his own way even if it means biting and scratching peoplr.
