Miggins in Mourning

April 17th 2011 21:00

Miggins (of Higgins and MIggins fame) is in his element according to Fred. The once quiet cat who stayed in the background while his heftier brother got the entire spotlight is now vocalising. A lot.

It’s weird to see this once-silent cat miaow. Prior to Higgins’ passing, Miggins had to be bribed with a piece of ham or cheese in order to make some noise. Ditto Higgins. Now Miggins miaows out of the blue and for no apparent reason. He sits in Higgins’ old chair.

Watching him resting in his new spot, I had no idea that there even had been designated spots for each cat until my ex-neighbour told me: “He’s sitting in Higgins’ chair. I think he misses him and doesn’t know why he’s gone. He could be hoping he comes back.”

That said, my ex-neighbour still mourns Higgins. “I go through periods where I think I didn’t do enough, that if I had only gone to another vet instead of the one I used.”

“You did the best you could,” I said, feeling my own guilt about losing my ducks. One can play the “if only” game for days but for what purpose? It only creates more guilt.
