Move Over Hello Kitty, Here’s Charmmy Kitty

When it comes to shopping, my sister and I are opposites. While I prefer to browse in the high end of town (namely Prada, Fendi, Longchamp and Coach), she loves two dollar shops. The cheaper the better. Sometimes I wonder how we could be related.
One Saturday afternoon, I was accompanying my sister on her two dollar shop spending spree when she said she wanted to see a Japanese two dollar shop. I had mentioned it to her in passing one day and could barely remember the address. Still, like a psychic trying to locate a dead body, I could picture the shop but not the street. I decided to go for a walk while my sister followed. Unbelievably, I managed to locate it within minutes. My sister was delighted as she loves Japanese products. I begged to differ but decided to follow her in. Bored after watching my sister browse at homewares, I decided to wander up and down the aisles. That was when I spotted some Charmmy Kitty stationery products.
Created by Sanrio, the same company that churns out thousands of Hello Kitty products, I never quite understood why the much cuter Charmmy Kitty never took off. Ditto Tuxedo Sam, Sanrio’s penguin creation. I had seen Charmmy Kitty products a few years ago in Chinatown but they were too expensive for me to buy. Now, courtesy of the Japanese two dollar shop, I could have my own set of Charmmy Kitty paper bags for $2.50. I can now have a piece of the dream. Now, if I can only talk my sister into buying a Prada keyring…
