My Close Encounter with an Animal Liberationist
June 3rd 2009 21:00
I normally don’t buy junk food but one day I wanted some coleslaw so I decided to head out to my local KFC.
Outside, I saw a small group of people demonstrating against KFC. I took one of their flyers and started to read it as I headed inside to get my coleslaw. A woman started shouting at me, making rude comments such as, “If you knew how their chickens were treated you wouldn’t eat here.”
That infuriated me and I walked off and headed inside the restaurant in anger. Who was this stranger to tell me what to do? She was assuming I was buying chicken when I had no intention of doing so.
Back home, I told my neighbour. She said I should have told them I was there only to buy coleslaw but why should I have to justify myself to these people? At the end of the day, I was the one who was minding my own business and the woman was the one who was invading my personal space.
With all due respect to her concern for chickens, at the end of the day, she had an agenda to push and she was going about it the wrong way. Instead of creating sympathy for her cause, all she was doing was getting my back up. I think Butterscotch could have done a better job than her.
I can see him standing there and rubbing his face against each passer-by’s hand. He would miaow and purr and his tail would point to his pile of flyers. The passer-by would pick up the flyer, have a read and sign Butterscotch’s petition.
Oh, if only animals ruled the world and not humans…
