I spent last weekend mourning the loss of Princess, the cat that was microwaved to death. I had been maudlin all week so when a colleague asked how I was, I told her the truth: I had been feeling sad. I also told her what happened to Princess and she was horrified. Unlike some of my cat-hating colleagues, this lady loves cats and has two of her own. She told me she wanted to work with animals.
“So do I,” I said. “But I couldn’t be a vet as it means putting them to sleep.”
She agreed and told me she loved animals so much she couldn’t even watch RSPCA Animal Rescue. I’m a big fan of that show but I do find it painful to watch. I often get tears in my eyes when I see abused animals on that show. I feel so helpless. Which reminds me, I’m annoyed at my friends. This year I asked them not to buy me any presents for my birthday and if they really wanted to buy something, to donate some money to the RSPCA or the Cat Protection Society. So what happened? They go and buy me presents. Don’t get me wrong – the presents were very nice and it was obvious they put a lot of thought into it but I kept thinking the money would have been better off going to an animal shelter. At least I have one friend – who is away overseas – who loves my idea and is planning to honour it. She is also happy for me to donate money to a charity instead of buying her a present.
But back to my colleague. She told me she also had a sad weekend. She was driving around with her husband when she spotted a cat lying on the road. She told her husband to stop the car but he kept saying, “It’s dead anyway.” In the end her husband did stop the car so she can go out and check the cat. Unfortunately it was dead but I’m glad there are people like her still around.
