My Environmentally Friendly Cockroach Killing Method
March 3rd 2009 21:00
Don’t you just hate cockroaches? Years ago I lived in a cockroach-infested building. Even the cleanest neighbours had cockroaches.
One day I went out and left a glass of Coke on the floor. When I came back it was filled with several cockroaches that had drowned in there. Their tiny bodies were floating on the surface. This gave me an idea: why not use Coke or other sugary drinks to drown cockroaches? Not only was this cheaper than using pesticide, it was more environmentally friendly.
I started to leave half-filled glasses of Coke or orange juice lying on the floor each day before I went to work. When I came home I found dozens of the little buggers in the glass. After several days the quantity dropped to where I was only getting one or two. I knew it was time to stop and I never had problems with cockroaches again.
Now that we’re on the topic of cockroaches, my cleaner-cum-caretaker friend Fred claims cockroach poo has a smell. How could they have a smell? I thought. But then, I don’t make a habit of sniffing cockroach droppings. And even if I did, they are so small they would hardly give off a smell that can be detected by the human nose. So how did Fred…?
His explanation was simple. One of the tenants in one of the buildings he cleans moved out, leaving a huge pile of cockroaches and their droppings. She never cleaned up her flat. She was, in Fred’s words, a “total grot”. He said the quantity of droppings gave off a bad smell and from that moment on, Fred referred to this tenant as the Cockroach Woman.

I once read that humans have been around for about 7 millions years but cockroaches have been around far longer and are likely to be around long after we're gone.
Who's going to leave half-glasses of Coke out then!
