My First Love Bite from Butterscotch
December 3rd 2008 21:00
Hanging out at Brett’s one night, I was playing with Butterscotch, who I hadn’t seen for over a month. Butterscotch sat on his favourite spot which was Brett’s brown cube seat and looked at me with his yellow-green eyes. It was like he was trying to tell me something. I went over and started stroking him. He lay on his side and continued looking at me. I kept stroking the side of his body when suddenly he pulled his head up, turned and sunk his teeth onto my wrist. It only lasted one or two seconds and it didn’t hurt. But I could feel the love.
Gingersnap, who had been lying in his favourite spot which was the basket, now came into the lounge room. Now I had both cats to play with, I took turns stroking them. I was rewarded with two head butts from Gingersnap.
Both cats ended up on the floor, standing next to each other. I was wearing a long black skirt and both cats took turns sticking their heads inside my skirt only to get stuck. Whenever I looked down, I could see one of them pushing their paws against the fabric, trying to push it away so they could be free again. Finally commonsense won over: each cat pushed the skirt away from their faces and once they could see, they quickly escaped.
Another cute thing they do is sticking their heads out of the curtains. Gingersnap, in particular, is a pro at parting the curtains with his paws and then sticking his head out between them so he could see what is going on in the world outside. There’s nothing nicer than to be greeted with his face in the window when I arrive at Brett’s.

In cat battle, eye contact cannot be broken or it means you lose. The second the eye contact is broken the other cat rushes in to attack, so if someones naughty I make eye contact and hold it - fiercely - until THEY look away. The only cat who breaks to rules is Kmans Sammy, he has this knack for being in full eye contact, and just when he knows he cant hold it any longer and hes about to lose he goes, "Man! Behind you! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?" and makes emphatic gestures with his head to look behind you. As soon as you do, he attacks or runs away. For years Ive been 'red carding' him for doing it to his poor brother Rowdy, who always plays by the book, and still falls for it after all these years!

I will try the blinking trick next time. I have read, though, that eye contact with cats is considered bad manners in the feline world. Although Butterscotch and Gingersnap don't mind me looking at them, I try not to lock eyes with the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat, as he be get aggressive. What is cute about the GTC, though, is how there's no pretension with him. If he's happy he will miaow back at me, if he's not he'll ignore me. I love it when I miaow at him and he miaows back.
