My Hopes Have Been Dashed

Coming home from work one night, I was umming and aahing about attending a body corporate meeting I had been invited to, even though I was a renter, not owner. In the end I thought, what the hell, it’s worth attending just in case I decide I may one day want to buy one of the units.
In the end, I was glad I went. The agenda contained the usual BC issues such as maintenance and repairs. Finally, the issue of pets was raised. I discovered not only were pets not allowed (except for “visiting pets”), a recent by-law had been passed to make pet ownership even more difficult. So much for my dream of eventually buying a unit in this particular building and sharing it with my own Butterscotch and Gingersnap.
The BC was concerned about being sued.
“There was a person who had a dog who left a dog toy on the ground and someone tripped over it. We had to settle,” complained one of the members. “Due to dogs barking and leaving poo everywhere they decrease the value of property. A real estate agent told me the value can be decreased by as much as 15%.”
Really? I thought given that most apartment blocks don’t allow pets that those that did would be more valuable a la units with parking.
On the other hand, it makes me easier to tell people who try to offer me kittens to back off; I’d love to take them but with the BC and my landlady saying no pets, it’s just too hard.
This is what the RSPCA has to say about this issue:
