My Insomnia Cure: Thinking About Cats
November 16th 2008 21:00
Like many insomniacs, I dread going to bed as I have no idea how long it will take me to fall asleep. I’ve tried counting sheep, deep breathing, reading books, having hot drinks but so far none of these techniques seem to work. I’ve also tried sleeping pills. They work like a dream but my doctor recommends using them once a week, at most. So after trying these techniques I’ve found one that works for me 95% of the time: thinking about cats. So each night I curl up in bed and place photos of Butterscotch and Gingersnap next to me. I will grab a book or magazine about cats and lie there for half an hour, reading and looking at the pictures. I also imagine I’m curled up asleep with Butterscotch and Gingersnap lying beside me. What a beautiful fantasy. My doctor loves this idea. I only wish it was true.
I also wish I could fall asleep as easily as a cat. When sleep fails to come I can lie in bed for hours before dropping off. When my insomnia is at its worst, I will stay awake all night and go to work the next day. Somehow I can function on 0 sleep, albeit temporarily.
Here’s a shot of my beloved babies having a snooze late one Saturday night.
