My Kitty Friend Has Disappeared

Do you remember this beautiful tabby tomcat that I used to meet on the stairs while I am on the way to and from work? He has definitely disappeared.
My last sighting was about last autumn. When winter came, I thought his owners simply put him in hibernation. But it’s now summer and I still haven’t come across my kitty friend. I miss him so much. It used to be so nice to find him sitting up on the stairs, as if he was waiting for me, after I had finished work. I liked how he liked to rub his body against me and climb up onto my lap. He used to cheer me up after a long day at work.
I’d like to know what has happened to him but I will probably never know. Maybe he has become an indoors-only cat. He could have gone to a new home. He could have gotten lost one day and ended up a street cat. Or he could have died from illness or being run over. The saddest part is not knowing as the not-knowing side of this leads to no resolution and the hope that – no matter how slim – their friend is alive and well somewhere and will come home. I’m sure any animal lover who has lost one of their companion animals feel exactly the same.
But sometimes there are happy endings. When my friend Brett lost Butterscotch, he was stressed and depressed for days. Luckily for him, he was able to eventually locate Butterscotch. When he was reunited with his cat, Brett cried tears of joy. Gingersnap, Butterscotch’s brother, was equally delighted.
