My Mum’s Kitty Litter Concerns
February 5th 2009 21:00
Believe it or not, to this day, my parents still don’t understand that cats are very clean and are perfectly capable of finding places to go to the toilet and then to dispose of their waste.
This is despite the fact I have told my parents many times that my favourite boys, Butterscotch and Gingersnap, are toilet trained and have a special place to do their business in.
You might wonder how they can be so ignorant. Simple. My parents aren’t into animals, although my Mum did have a cat when she was living in China when she was young. The cat never got toilet trained so it would poo all over the place. My Mum would then rub its face into its waste, not knowing she was only making the problem worse. It never occurred to my mum to ask a vet as her family was poor.
So whenever they see my latest photos of my boys, out come the same questions: “Where do they go to the toilet? Do they pee and poo all over the place?”
My answer is always the same: “No, they have a cat litter tray which they use to pee and poo in.”
My mum will then say, “Taking care of animals can be so gross.” Maybe to her it is but I’m sure she had to put up with a lot of peeing and pooing from me and my sister when we were babies. How different is that from dealing with animal waste? And when we had our ducks, my task was to hose the garage every morning. It was the only place on our property which kept the ducks safe and secure and where they could poo in. Surprisingly, I never minded doing that because the joy I got from having ducks far outweighed the pain of cleaning up after them.
