My new Dinner Companion
October 5th 2010 21:00
Years ago my old man AKA Papa decided to throw his one and only birthday party. He invited everyone he knew, donned his best disco suit and closed his Chinese restaurant for the night. It was all for nothing – only one person showed up. Can you imagine the humiliation Papa must have felt: Eyes on the clock, waiting minute by minute, hoping the guests would show up and then the realisation that they weren’t going to come. As kids, my sister and I had no idea what to do except to lay low.
Which is why I dread my birthday. Each year I have a small intimate birthday dinner with only my closest friends in attendance. Each year they come. Each year I dread what happened to Papa happening to me.
And this year, it almost happened. Due to various reasons, most of the invitees couldn’t show up. I was annoyed; these people know when my birthday is and I couldn’t believe they had the nerve to say they got their dates mixed up when they made their plans.
I was going to cancel the dinner but at the last minute decided to go. My sister and I decided to bring my stuffed cat Momo to make up the numbers. Imagine my shock when shortly after I arrived the other guests turned up. I was like, what are you doing here?
It turned out some of their plans had fallen through and they could attend. Nevertheless, my sister and I couldn’t resist seating Momo at the table and placing a meal in front of her. If my friends thought it was weird, they knew better than to say anything.
