My Sister is Scared of Dead Butterflies
May 18th 2008 21:00
My sister is scared of dead butterflies, particularly those enclosed in a glass box. I find this weird as it’s clear that they’re harmless. And the glass box means you don’t have to come into contact with them.
There’s a shop that we often go past that sells butterflies enclosed in glass boxes. I always like to stop to look at them. I particularly like the bright blue ones like the ones in this picture. But my sister will try to look away. The same thing happens when I look at the dead butterflies at the Australian Museum. My sister will completely by-pass that section while I like to stop and look and admire their beauty.
The funny thing is that live butterflies don’t bother my sister. I’ve asked her why dead butterflies bother her so much. She says she can’t explain; all she can say is that there is something about them that give her the willies. Fair enough. That’s why I find phobias so fascinating: they are so irrational and they can be interesting ice breakers. Imagine going to a dinner party and asking each person present what their phobias are. I’m sure you will bound to get one or two interesting responses.
