Several months ago my sister’s beloved goldfish called Oleander died, leaving behind her smaller companion, Fishy. Fishy used to follow the much larger Oleander whenever she swam. The two of them reminded me of a planet and its moon.

For several days after Oleander died, Fishy behaved strangely. She lay in her bowl, listless. My sister swore that Fishy knew Oleander was gone and that goldfish are much smarter than people think.

After awhile, things returned to normal. Fishy went back to swimming around her bowl. My sister was thinking about getting a new companion for Fishy but never got around to it.

Then came the sad day when she came home and found Fishy had died. My sister thinks it was due to the new water she had put in the bowl. A few days before, the bowl was slowly going dark green with algae so my sister decided to clean the bowl and give Fishy new water to swim in. She believes Fishy had problems adjusting to the change in her environment and carked it. My sister has now decided to wait before getting more goldfish. Both Fishy and Oleander were over two years old when they died.
