This might sound funny to some people but my sister is sad that her goldfish died over the weekend. If Oleander II had lived, she would have been three years old this month.

Oleander II had been sick for a few weeks. She had bumped her head against one of the goldfish toys in the tank and a few days later, developed white marks on her head. My sister spoke to someone at a pet shop and they said it sounded like the bump had caused a scratch which had then become infected. They recommended Susan buy some medication to treat it.

The medication seemed to work. The infection cleared up straight away, although Oleander II still had white marks on her head. She became more active.

Then came the trip to our parents’ house. It was almost a three hour drive and we would be gone all weekend. My sister naturally brought the goldfish along since there was no one to feed them while she was away.

Oleander II seemed happy. Then came the trip home. Ten minutes after my sister started the car, she noticed a big splosh on her leg. She pulled over at the nearest petrol station and noticed the bag she put the goldfish in was leaking. She filled the bag with water and then placed it inside the goldfish tank. This time she made sure the tank was secure. The rest of the trip was uneventful.

The next morning, my sister fed her goldfish before she went to work. She noticed nothing unusual. But when she came home, poor Oleander II was belly up. Her goldfish friend was going crazy, not understanding why her friend wasn’t moving.

My sister was sad. She spent the rest of the day in a mute state. She wonders if the long trip had caused Oleander II to kick the bucket. Some people might say, “It’s just a goldfish” but to my sister, Oleander II and her predecessor were her friends. Her other goldfish has since calmed down but my sister is planning on getting it a new friend. I wonder if she is going to call it Oleander III.

3 years is an impressive lifespan for a fish. I feel, nothing would have saved her at that age. My sympathy. Its always hard to lose a friend.

Hi Kleo

I didn't know that. My sister's fish have all lived a couple of years.

Thanks for your wishes.

When I was a little tucker, I had two goldfish; Goldie and Blob.

One day one of them died, and the next day the other committed suicide by jumping out of their bowl.

I was really sad, I came home from school and there he was, all dried up on the floor

3 years impressive for a fish? I've had my goldfish for over 14 years.

Sorry for your loss.
