Don’t you hate people who like to give unwanted advice? It’s particularly annoying when it’s coming from a stranger. Take the day of my office’s Christmas party. There I was decked in a strapless designer dress. The colour: jacaranda blue. The cut: bias. The fabric: silk. The price: $400. I was minding my own business when some woman comes up to me and says, “That’s a lovely dress. But it would look nicer without your bra straps showing.”
I think the filthy look on my face said it all. If it was someone on the street, I would have just told her to f*ck off. Butterscotch or the Grouchy Tuxedo Cat would have bitten her. Since it was at work, I had to be careful; she could have been friends with the boss. So I bit the swear word that was forming on my tongue and came back with, “Well, I beg to differ.” I stared her down. She then backed off.
Don’t people know anything about fashion? Did I ask her for her opinion? Did it ever occur to her that I had dressed in front of the mirror? The bra she was referring to was a matching $400 La Perla bra, one I had carefully chosen as I knew it would blend into my outfit. And anyway, anyone who watches Sex and the City would know that it’s not that big a deal to flash one’s bra straps, particularly when they have a nice colour. Don’t people like her have anything else to worry about?
I told one of my colleagues what happened. The person I chose to talk to is also renowned for her love of fashion. She was shocked.
“If it wasn’t for the fact you just told me that story, I would have thought the bra straps were part of your dress,” she said.
Exactly. No wonder I hate people.
