New Friends

Now that I go on walks after work, I have encountered one cat (Pepe) and met many dogs. I have also met many nice people. For a misanthrope, this is good news. The strangers I encounter normally apologise whenever their dogs come near me. I like to reassure them by saying, “It’s okay. I like dogs.” It’s only humans that I can’t stand.
So it was no surprise that I ended up meeting a Cavoodle called Sunny.
There I was, busy exercising in the park, trying to shift some more kilos when I saw this incredibly cute dog approach me. It had cream coloured fur and looked liked an enormous Bichon Frise.
As with my previous encounters with dog owners in the park, the owner started apologising.
“It’s okay,” I said, letting the dog approach me.
“He’s going to lick your toes now,” he said as the dog gave my toes a few licks.
I reached down and patted the dog. “He’s beautiful,” I said. There was something unusual about the dog’s appearance but I was trying to figure out what it was when the owner said, “Thank you. He’s just had a shave which is why his fur looks so funny. Normally, he’s got curls everywhere.”
Aha! The dog’s body had been shaved but the groomer had left his face alone, giving him a leonine appearance.
“What breed is he?”
“A Cavoodle: A cross between a Poodle and a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.”
“What’s his name?”
“Sunny.”
That triggered a long forgotten memory.
“Do you walk around here a lot?” I asked.
“Yes. We live nearby.”
“I remember walking home one day. You must have been in front of me because I remember there was a dog and you kept calling out Sunny. That’s an unusual name which is why I remember.”
The owner let me take some photos of Sunny. I also got to pat the dog some more before I said, “I better not hold you up. Nice meeting you.”
“Yeah, nice meeting you.” Sunny’s owner waved as he walked off.
Note to my inner misanthrope: Not all people are nasty.
