OK, I Give up

Is anyone a fan of science fiction/fantasy books out there? Are you able to give me some pointers on how to enjoy books from this genre?
I’ve tried to get into this area. I told myself to open my mind; there’s more to books than Harlequin romances and best sellers. I started off good; I started buying Erin Hunter’s Warriors cat novels because I liked the artwork on the covers. I soon became a Warriors fan before moving onto her Seekers bear novels. So far, so good.
I tried other authors and this was when things went awry. Richard Adams, Gabriel King, Shirley Rousseau Murphy…all boring and not exactly my cup of tea. What went wrong here? All three have written cat or dog novels. Why do I only enjoy Erin Hunter’s novels in this genre? It can’t because the animals talk as there’s plenty of talking in all the sci-fi/fantasy novels I’ve tried. It can’t be the plots as there’s plenty of creativity and action in them.
I’ve since found other sci-fi/fantasy novels that are about cats. I feel tempted to buy them but I have to remind myself that if I haven’t enjoyed other novels in this genre, what’s the likelihood that I would enjoy these books?
It’s a shame as Fred is a huge science fiction fan and this is another thing we could have had in common. Jack Vance is his favourite author. “What I like is the imagination and creativity that goes into these novels.” He says. “Sometimes you wonder how someone can come up with something that imaginative.”
Oh well, you can’t blame a girl for trying.
